I get asked a lot: “What A/B test should I run first when I don’t even get 1,000 sessions a month?” It’s a real question — small traffic feels like a hard limit. But low traffic doesn’t mean no progress. It changes the tactics. Below I share the practical, high-impact experiments I actually run for lean homepages, why they work with small samples, and how to get meaningful learning without waiting six months for a statistically “perfect” result.

Start with a decision framework (so you don’t waste time)

Before you pick a single test, I use a simple filter to prioritise ideas:

  • Bayesian calculators give credible intervals rather than binary “significant/not-significant” outcomes. That’s more useful when you care about probable gain, not strict p-values.

Tools like Optimizely, VWO, or even lightweight JS libraries support bandit-style experiments. If you’re DIY, use a Bayesian calculator to interpret small-sample results sensibly.

Keep experiments simple and targeted

Small traffic means you can’t test ten changes at once. My rules:

  • One hypothesis per test. If you change headline, hero image and CTA copy simultaneously, you won’t learn which change drove the effect.
  • Run short tests focused on top-of-funnel behaviours (hero clicks, resource downloads).
  • Prefer “bold” variants — bigger differences give larger signals. Subtle button color tweaks rarely move the needle with low samples.

Examples of experiments that typically win early

Here are real experiments I’ve run on low-traffic sites that produced clear learnings:

  • Replacing a generic hero image with the product in-context doubled the click-through rate on the primary demo CTA.

  • Create 1–2 bold variants (headline, CTA copy, hero image).
  • Choose a testing method (A/B, bandit, or sequential). Use a Bayesian lens for interpretation.
  • Run the test for a minimum of 2–4 weeks or until you have directional consistency.
  • Corroborate with qualitative data and then roll out or iterate.

Small traffic forces you to be pragmatic: prioritise high-impact micro-conversions, use qualitative signals to create better hypotheses, and adopt Bayesian/decision-focused thinking instead of chasing p-values. Do that and you’ll compound improvements far faster than waiting for “perfect” statistical certainty.
